Medical Department
The Union City School District Board of Education is committed to ensuring that all students receive a quality education in a safe and secure learning environment.
Accordingly, the District has its own Medical Department staffed by 18 professional nurses, as well as support staff, and is led by Coordinator Maryury Martinetti. Our nursing staff provides medical services to all students, as well as providing students and guardians with outside agency referrals to additional health and social services.
In addition to providing first aid for sick and injured students, the Medical Department also provides:
- Screenings for vision, hearing, height, weight, scoliosis and blood pressure
- Reviews of immunization records in order to comply with State of New Jersey mandates
- Develops individualized health care plans
- Administers medications prescribed by a physician during schools hours
- Monitors chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, congenital heart disease, food allergies, seizures and obesity
- Monitors students with special needs, including physical disabilities and learning and behavior problems
- Counsels pregnant students
- Communicates with health care providers
- Assists students and their families in securing appropriate health care
- Organizes programs focused on staff managing hypertension, losing weight and managing stress
- Advocates for families and children with special needs with child protective services, the legal system and school districts
- Arranges for psychological counseling during times of school trauma
- Acts as the public health officer at each building site to safeguard the health and safety of students and staff
- Emergency Response teams
- Educating staff in student health issues
